GCSE Latin: Positive Adjectives

Adjectives: positive forms

1st/2nd Declension Adjectives

These adjectives decline the same as servus for masculine, puella for feminine and bellum for neuter, hence they are termed “1st and 2nd Declension” or “2-1-2” adjectives.

miser, pulcher and sacer also follow this pattern.

ceteri, nonnulli and pauci also follow this pattern, but only have plural forms.

3rd Declension adjectives

These adjectives have identical forms for masculine and feminine, and so are listed with two endings, e.g. fortis-e (fortis being m/f nom. sing. and forte being the neuter).

Note that celer, celeris, celere belongs to this group despite starting with three terminations.

The masculine, feminine and neuter nom. sing. of some adjectives (e.g. audax and ingens) are the same, so these are listed alongside their genitive singular (e.g. audax, audacis), as this shows the stem used for declension.
